Hi Fiona

Of course I remember you! And it is so lovely to hear from you again. It sounds as though you were sad to leave Australia but I'm sure you're going to have some fun before you return home. (Seven countries in 6 weeks sounds a bit of a challenge though!) We loved Malaysia and Singapore although we didn't spend very much time there - it's a country I very much want to go back to some day. Penang in particular was lovely, but incredibly hot! I didn't like Bangkok very much - a bit seedy - not a place I will be going back to in a hurry. Loved Hong Kong.

But I guess by now you are almost at the end of your trip and will be back in Taiwan soon. If you can I would love to see some pictures of your home town and Taiwan generally. Who knows we may get there one day. For now though, we are back in London after 12 fantastic months. After leaving Australia we spent a month in Indonesia. Bali was gloriously beautiful. We stayed away from the main tourist area and travelled north to Ubud and the north coast doing some trekking on the way. From Bali we crossed to Java on the ferry - which is only a short ride across a narrow strip of water - and gradually made our way to Jakarta stopping at Bromo, Solo, Yogyakarta, Pangandaran on the coast and finally catching our flight to India. Unfortunately a month is far too short to do Indonesia justice, but we couldn't get a visa to stay any longer.

India was quite a culture shock for us and very different from anywhere else we've been. The cities are noisy, dirty and teaming with people - very different from Australia, that's for sure. But we soon adapted and spent 6 weeks in Rajasthan and really enjoyed the smaller places where the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming.

We arrived home at the end of August and now our travels seem like distant memories and I'm missing the hot weather. It is cold and rainy here and I'm finding it difficult to keep warm after having spent so long in Asia. I think it must be time to start planning our next trip!

How is Mella? Have you left her in Australia still working hard at the Britannia? Do say hello to her from us.

You were both so very kind to us and we appreciated that very much. Who knows, we may meet again some day. And if you come to London do let us know.

Best wishes

Christine

Hello Christine and Hattie,

How are you? I'm Fiona from Taiwan. We meet in Britannia in Perth. Do you still remember me? I'm so surprised to see you mention about me in your blog. That's just like what I always say that when I was travelling all place, a lots of people are helping me all the time, and they ask for nothing as well. So that's just a small favor to take you to airport, as I know what you done are such an amazing thing that what I always hope one day I could do it as well. I’m so surprise that you write everything everyday… And so glad I could be a part of journey even just a short ride.

These days it’s so busy since you leave until now, finally I got the time and sit down to check my memory book. Next Wednesday would be my working holiday visa expired date, and that’s the day I have to leave Australia and back home. It’s amazing to meet so many people during these two years. I’m thinking all the time that so many things happened in these two years and change my thinking a lot. Now whatever what’s happened, I believe everything comes for reason, then even the bad things happened I’ll be still happy to accept it. That’s a good lesson for me in my life…

I’m leaving Australia on 14 Sep, and going to 7 counties (Kuala Lumpur, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bangkok, Macao, Hong-Kong, and Manila) in 1.5 month before I’m back to Taiwan, my home sweet home. Because I gonna travelling by myself, hopefully everything would be alright!! Before I’m 30 years old I want to see as much as I can.

Happy travelling, be safe, be good. Hopefully one day I could see you somewhere in the world, maybe in London or Taiwan. Keep going your journey, take care!! Wish all the best~~ \(^.^)/

Best wishes,

Fiona

Almost tangible relief at liking something in India, after trying to conceal your annoyance at the chaos and dirt. And you sure aren't a fan of Lonely Planet, so your feedback to them at the end of this will be interesting to read.
Well, you are on the last lap now...I hope getting back goes well and you return fit and healthy. How is Andy? I wish you would comment more on his reactions, moods, observations and activities...No doubt we will get that as oral communication when the time is appropriate.
Keep up the good writing.

A touching piece, this Christine. The Sharma family seem delightful...hard working, understanding the value of friendship, honesty and education. And yet they will be discriminated for ever because of their caste. People are responsible for the world we live in, and the more I try to understand 'people' the less I know.

Well, you have excelled yourself in India. REally fascinating and illuminating...I can tell you don't really like most of it, which makes the good bits even better. I am surprised at how chaotic much of it is, as well as the appalling levels of hygiene. But the contrasts must make it very interesting...unlike Senegal, for instance, which is clearly more developed in many ways - efficient transport and railways stations for example - has nothing of historic cultural interest.
I like the rare insights into Andy's attitude to the many experiences, such as coming to terms with a vegetarian existence. I am looking forward to further adventures...

Brilliant...who needs to go there when they can read such graphic descriptions!
YOu will definately have to travel in AFrica and America after this, as London, Yorkshire, France will be so boring. If travel is a drug, you are now hooked. It's an expensive habit, but a wonderful trip, and you really do enjoy the highs, judging by your blog. Clumsy puns intended but you get the drift.
Great start to India...can't wait to read on.
The bus journey beautifully told, and the hit or miss toilet reference had me laughing.

Shame about the hats. Who did Andy sit next to? I'm sure Andy would have started talking and found his travelling companion interesting if not as useful.

If I have one minor quibble about your excellent and illuminating blog it is that I only get your impressions, not Andy's. Too late now, but I expect a diary from Andy a few weeks after he gets back!

Indonesia seems to have been a great place to recharge the batteries for the final exertion that will be India. A good decision to stay with a family...will be the best way to get to know the culture and not be hassled too much. Depending on the family, of course.
Lonely Planet are likely to get a few 'Dissapointed from Forest Hill' feedbacks by the sound of it!
Marjorie always delighted when a postcard arrives, so well done there! How come none to 5 Jelf Road, esp now the boys are there most of the time.
Dan is now also travelling...he has arrived in Italy with Jemma who organised the holiday. He was sceptical about her abilities to arrange the transport etc, so I guess it will be a week by the pool and in bed.
Pleased Andy has discovered the pleasures of reading.
Keep up the good blogs. See you next month...

Sounds like some feedback required to Lonely Planet for the wretched accommodation.
Sounds as if it is Bali great, Java less good. But still wonderful experiences. I don't read much about Andy's activities/views/wellbeing/achievments...I hope he is ok and enjoying it as much as you are. What does he do whilst you are tapping away on the blog. Providing the mot juste? correcting the syntax? Having a beer?
Summer now arrived in England with temperatures in low 30s. And of course everyone complaining except me!
It made my game of cricket on Sunday very enjoyable, as did my 32 runs shared in an opening stand of 85. Got a few bruises to show for it. Then put my hand in the way of a slog when fielding and now likely to lose a finger nail. Tim Young did some surgery on the nail after the game...putting a red hot end of the paper clip through the nail of the affected bruised finger to relieve the pressure of the blood under the nail. It was painful, and the smell of burning nail not nice...but then relief from the pain as the blood escaped. Now just a dark blue finger nail and a bit of soreness when typing. So no more tapping, I'm off!
Wonderful descriptions and so interesting. Bali sounds really great! And fancy meeting people who once lived in Kirkstall AVenue. Small world, but as you say, it happens all the time.
Hope you are still enjoying it! Summer has arrived...there's more blue sky than cloud, and once out of the cool breeze, it's fairly warm. I'm playing cricket several times this season, so that is something to look forward to. Yes, life here also interesting but possible less so than where you are and where you will be going.

I am enjoying these blogs, Christine. So glad the weather worked so you did the incredible snorkling. Has Andy caught one fish yet? The ants and other irritants clearly annoy you, but hey, a small price to pay for what seems a fantastic part of Australia.
Grey nomads...that is an interesting description. Are you two likely to join this band of travellers when you get back to mundane, predictable and stressful London? Or will the comfort of a soft bed, warm shower, Sainsbury's well stocked shelves, and world class culture be too appealing?
Gillian and I met with Helen and Adrian in a very good restaurant in Bayswater. Spent three hours eating, drinking and talking...you were even mentioned once or twice!
Good luck with the rest of your trip and keep up the marvellous narrative.
Or will the comfort of a soft bed, warm shower, Sainsbury’s well stocked shelves, and world class culture be too appealing?
Gillian and I met with Helen and Adrian in a very good restaurant in Bayswater. Spent three hours eating, drinking and talking…you were even mentioned once or twice!
Good luck with the rest of your trip and keep up the marvellous narrative.

A lot of driving...I hope the van stands up to it! The secluded beach sounds nice...is it like Cromer without the seven or eight hardy families? without the squalls of rain? without the grey clouds? without the quaint Victorian buildings, without the pubs? What has it got going for it then?
Nicer than the Brixton Academy? It is being refurbished at the moment, though difficult to imagine it could match an outdoor picture house. Sounds good.
I laughed at your comment about the birds also out of touch with the timetable. Shame you have a knack for visiting places at the wrong time, as it is not very practical to go back again. Still, Broome sounds very laid back and pleasant, if chilly at night, which seems strange looking at where it is on the map. Is the sea cold?
Hi, sorry to hear about the bites and the general feeling of well hidden disappointment with the West coast road trip so far. Has Any caught much yet? I have missed a big chunk, and can't understand the reference to Wicked. Is it some sort of swingers site for travellers? If so, what are you getting a refund for?
Seems your decision not to get a 4WD was a mistake. Maybe all will be revealed when I go into the March and April archive.
Indonesia will be interesting. It is a huge country...is there nowhere less touristy than Bali?
Still, you are very seasoned travellers...I got excited go to Eltham Palace yesterday. Eight miles from Brixton, and almost in Sidcup!
Reminds me of the leaving party of the finance director of Reuters. In the course of this career with the company he had travelled the world and lived in some great places. During the farewell speeches he was asked where he and his wife would be retiring to. He answered in all seriousness: 'Sidcup'.
Best
